The basis of Identity Cards comes from the experiences of William Thompson, a patient of Doctor Oliver Sacks whose amnesiac condition is documented in Sack's book, "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat." Thompson copes with his condition by continuously creating a fluid narrative encompassing both himself and the world around him to fill the gaps in his memory. Identity Cards tries to emulate Thompson's experience, by forcing the player to adopt a series of new identities in a short span of time.
